Appleton, J. W., Stahlstecher in England, tätig 1834-41. Schuf Stahlstiche nach W. H. Bartlett für W. Beattie, Switzerland, 1836 (u. a. Gall. on the "Tete noire" near Trient, 1834), und nach G. Campion für Beattie, Scotland illustrated (Stirling Castle, 1836). Nach C. Stanfield stach er für Stanfield’s coast scenery, 1836, u. a. Worthbarrow Bay, Dorsetshire, für J. Carne, Syria, III, 1838, Port of Beirut, und 1840 schuf er nach D. O. Hill für Wilson/ Chamber, Land of Burns, das Blatt Brow on the Solway. Aus dem gleichen Jahr stammt der Stahlstich Schloß Weimar. Zu A.s größten und besten Stichen zählt A City of ancient Greece, 1840, nach W. Linton, publ. bei Finden, R. Gall. of Brit. Art, 1838-49. Weitere Stiche schuf er nach Bartlett für Beattie, Ports, harbours ..., 1842 (Port Glasgow, 1841), nach W. Brockedon für Brockedon, Italy ..., 1842/43 (The Waldensian College at La Tour), und nach C. Bentley für R. Martin, Indian Empire, um 1857 (Kursalee ...).
