Hospital of the Merciful Brethren with the Church of the Most Holy Trinity

Von dem großangelegten barocken Komplex, den Franz Anton Graf Sporck Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts im malerischen Riesengebirgsvorland erbauen ließ, blieben nur das Gebäude des Spitals der Barmherzigen Brüder, die Kirche der Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit mit der Sporckschen Familiengruft und eine monumentale Treppe mit Wasserkaskaden erhalten. Als absolutes Unikat von Kukus gilt dessen skulpturale Ausschmückung aus der Werkstatt des großen Barockbildhauers Matthias Bernhard Braun, in erster Linie die allegorischen Zyklen der Tugenden und der Laster. Im Spitalgebäude blieb eine Apotheke mit barocker Inenneinrichtung erhalten. Aus der Braunschen Werkstatt stammen auch die im nahen Wald Bethlehem befindlichen Felsen-Skulpturen und -Reliefs. Das ikonographische Konzept von Kukus und Bethlehem stellt im gesamteuropäischen Maßstab eine Rarität dar.

Of the extensive complex of spas, manor, and other buildings it was only the Baroque Hospital of the Merciful Brethren with the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, and the Bethlehem, mentioned in detail later, which survived in Kuks until today. The hospital church was constructed according to the plans of G. B. Alliprandi in 1707 - 1715. The building contractor was earl František A. Špork. When viewing the church's front face, the sculptural allegory cycle, 12 Depravities, is situated to the right of it, the cycle of 12 Virtues on the opposite side. With the exception of one, all of these valuable sculptures were created by Matyáš B. Braun. The very hospital was founded by earl Špork in 1708 and it was finished shortly after 1715.
