Rudolf Scheffler, 1884-1973, was born in Zwickau, Germany, coming to the United States in 1924. He established a studio in Brooklyn Heights, New York. He painted murals (including those in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1932), and created mosaics and stained glass for churches, synagogues and public buildings in nineteen states. Scheffler was considered an important craftsman and architectural muralist in America and Germany. Scheffler painted on Monhegan Island, Maine in the teens and twenties with other Old Lyme impressionists, including William Chadwick, Wilson Irvine, Ernest Albert, Chauncey Ryder and William Robinson. He is associated with the town of Old Lyme, Connecticut. In 1989, the Florence Griswold Museum, in Old Lyme, put on a retrospective exhibition of his paintings. The book, Rudolf Scheffler (1884-1973), by Peter H. Falk, was published by the Lyme Historical Society and Florence Griswold Art Museum in conjunction with the exhibition. It contains an essay on the artist, his exhibition record, and the locations of his mosaics, murals & stained glass. Scheffler's work on the stained glass windows in St. Augustine's Church, Larchmont, New York, dedicated in 1928, is documented in The Art and Architecture of St. Augustine's Church, written and edited by William C. McGuire II, and published in 2003. Scheffler designed and created the windows in conjunction with the Emil Frei Art Glass Company of St. Louis, Missouri, which were executed at their studio in Munich, Germany.
