Thiemann, Carl (1881-1966)

Carl Thiemann was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague from 1905. To begin with he was engrossed with etching, but became increasingly fascinated by coloured wood cuts soon becoming a member of the leading group of modern wood engravers. In1908 he moved to Dachau. His exhibitions were a great success here and in 1911 he won the competition organized by the company Krupp for the design of an jubilee magazine. He stayed in Dachau until 1966. His best and most poular works are his woodcuts. They are cut and hand-printed with great precision and display resourcefulness in their use of colour. Works by Thiemann can be seen in the Gemäldegalerie Dachau.
